Would there still be social progress and technological improvements without capitalism?

Capitalism has definitely made our lives more convenient and sophisticated. From what I know about communism, it seems that only primitive peasant economy can ensure the equality of all members of society and therefore the society would have little technological improvements. Is that right or did Marx had something else in mind so that people can still utilize the power of science and create a more advanced society without competition and division of labor?
