Are seclusionist communities like the Amish oblivious to the dangers in modern society?

The recent attack on the Amish school whereby three were killed shocked residents of the area. The school had no security whatsoever. Is it shocking that this could happen? Or is it more shocking, considering current state of affairs, that the community imagined something like this could not happen?
