Windows validation problem?

when i try to validate my windows it says "unable to establish a connection with the activation server. please check you network settings and confirm that you are able to connect to the internet, then try again" and obviously i can connect or i wouldnt be able to ask this question. so can any one tell me whats goin wrong.
